Vallejo PD Mobile Mental Health Unit Pilot Program Included in 2022 Federal Spending Legislation

The Vallejo Police Department (VPD) is pleased to announce that United States Congressman Mike Thompson’s federal funding request for the Solano County Safety Program has been included in the 2022 Fiscal Year spending legislation. As part of Congressman Thompson’s request, the appropriations bill would include a proposed award of $900,000 toward establishing a Community Mobile Mental Health Response Unit Pilot Program at the VPD. United States Senator Dianne Feinstein doubled-down on the initiative, submitting the project request to the Senate Committee of Appropriations.

“We are extremely grateful for the support our federal and state leaders have extended toward making trauma-informed care services in the Vallejo community a priority,” Chief of Police Shawny K. Williams stated. “As we continue to implement reforms, we understand the importance of creating collaborative partnerships that transform how we provide integrated services for our most vulnerable populations.”

"Funding this project is an opportunity to help the community heal, build back trust between residents and law enforcement, and most importantly, ensure our residents’ mental health needs are addressed in an appropriate and timely manner," Chief Williams continued.

Once signed into law, the pilot program is expected to include an EMT worker and mental health clinician to respond to mental health calls for services. The team would also help coordinate responses to those experiencing mental health-related and intellectual and developmental disabilities. The proposed unit would work collaboratively with our supplemental mental health agencies and Crisis Intervention Team officers as needed to coordinate calls that may require a police response.

As more information becomes available about the proposed award and program details, the Department will make that information available to the Vallejo community. Click here to see Congressman Mike Thompson’s formal announcement.
